Is Old Really Gold When It Comes To Old Toys?
By Scotie Keithlow
Time was when old meant discarding, especially when it came to toys. When old suddenly morphs into antique, throwing stuff away is the last thing people should do. So whether you're buying or selling, it would be a good idea to be acquainted with the prices that old, sorry antique toys, can command.
One way would be to get yourself a good guide, another to attend antique shows and familiarize yourself with how much certain toys can fetch. Or, you could scroll through eBay to get a feel of what kind of toys command what kind of prices. Why not, when what you or your parents, maybe even your grandparents paid a few dollars for, could now be quoted as worth several hundred or even thousands of dollars!
What are the toys that are in demand? Evil Knievil stuff, for one. The doll and the stunt cycle can fetch you a pretty penny in the antique market. And of course Barbies, especially if they come in an antique carrying case, can command hundreds of dollars. A hot favorite is the wooden rocking horse of old.
You could get over $1000 if your rocking horse is in a fairly good condition. So if you have any of these stashed away in an old chest up in the attic, now's the time to dust the cobwebs off, bring them out and make money on them! If you want to hold on to them till the prices climb even higher, make sure to display them - antiques always 'add' to the decor!
It isn't just the well-known toys that bring in the moolah. The Frisbees of the 70s could be sought-after items. So could, hold your breath, a tube of Mattel's plastic goop. As could marbles...yes, marbles. All they need to be is, well, old. That's what keeps their worth going up. If one marble can command a price of $500, old surely is fast turing into gold!
